What is ADHD?
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neuro-developmental condition that affects a person’s ability to focus, regulate attention, control impulses, and manage activity levels.
In simple terms, the brain has difficulty with executive functions such as:
-
concentrating
-
organising tasks
-
controlling impulses
-
managing time and emotions.
It usually begins in childhood and often continues into adulthood, affecting areas like work, relationships, and daily functioning.
Key symptoms include:
-
Inattention (difficulty focusing, forgetfulness)
-
Hyperactivity (restlessness, difficulty staying still)
-
Impulsivity (acting without thinking)
ADHD is common, treatable, and largely influenced by genetics, and many people with ADHD also have strengths such as creativity, energy, and problem-solving ability.
A Brief Guide to Adult ADHD Assessment: Is This Right for Me?
Many adults experience ongoing difficulties with attention, organisation, impulsivity, or restlessness. If these challenges have been present for many years and affect work, study, or relationships, an ADHD assessment may be helpful.
ADHD usually begins in childhood, although it may not be recognised until adulthood when life demands increase.
An assessment typically involves:
-
Discussing your current symptoms
-
Reviewing childhood history
-
Completing screening questionnaires
-
Considering other possible causes of attention difficulties.
The goal is to determine whether ADHD or another condition may be contributing to your symptoms and to guide appropriate treatment and support.
